DESCRIPTION: 3 letters from the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison regarding a dispute between Thomas Armat and the Smithsonian Institution. In the early 1920's, the Smithsonian displayed a motion picture device co-invented by Thomas Armat and C. Francis Jenkins but labelled it as the invention of Jenkins alone. Includes 1 TLS (w/ copy TLS and envelope) signed by Thomas Edison (25 May 1922) to Armat in support of his claim against the Smithsonian, giving Armat full credit for the invention of the motion picture projector which Edison marketed in 1896. Also includes 1 TLS from William H. Meadowcroft (7 Jun 1922), Assistant to Mr. Edison, to Armat enclosing a copy of a letter from Edison to Charles D. Walcott of the Smithsonian supporting Armat's claim against the museum. The copy of Edison's letter to Walcott (7 Jun 1922) contains a signature of Thomas Edison, but may have been signed for him by Meadowcroft or a secretary. Photographs and glass negatives of the two Edison letters can be found elsewhere in the collection.

Armat was enrolled at the Bliss School of Electricity when he was intorduced to C. Francis Jenkins by Bliss himself.

DESCRIPTION: 13 photos of 3 documents used in the case Armat Motion Picture Company v. Edison Manufacturing Company in 1908. The first document is 10 pages of 22 pages of testimony given by E. F. Murphy for the case. The second is 1 page of a letter from C. Francis Jenkins to Murphy regarding patents for the Tinyscope and the Phantoscope, both early motion picture devices worked on by Jenkins and Armat together. Both of these documents shed interesting light on the chronology of events in 1895 and the motives of Jenkins at that time with respect to patents. The third document is the typeset testimony of Thomas Armat, probably for the same case; only two pages have been photographed.

DESCRIPTION: 11 photos of the translation of Louis DuCos' patent on a camera in 1864, used as evidence by Thomas Armat, probably in Armat Motion Picture Company v. Edison Manufacturing Company. In 1864 DuCos invented a concept for a motion picture camera, but he was never able to create the device. He took out a patent on his idea. In the 1890's, C. Francis Jenkins "rediscovered" DuCos' patent and attempted to create the camera. Jenkins' device was flawed, but in 1895 when he met Thomas Armat, he told Armat that his version of DuCos' camera was operable.
